The award-winning documentary, A Crack in the Mountain from Alastair Evans will be showing at the Phoenix Cinema on June 5th, followed by a Q&A with Alastair.

'A Crack in the Mountain' tells the story of Hang Sơn Đoòng, the world's largest cave, located in the Phong Nha-Kẻ Bàng National Park in Vietnam. First found in 1990 by a local farmer, it wasn’t explored until 2009 when a British expedition team rigged ropes and descended down.

In 2014, plans were announced to build a cable car into Sơn Đoòng. This would of course be devastating for the environment, but the issue is far from a simple one! Huge concern grew for the cave’s delicate ecosystem, and the local community were divided over the socio-economic benefits versus natural destruction this development would bring. The film is a captivating, stunning portrayal of adventure and natural beauty, whilst exploring the complex, multifaceted debate.
