Nine of history’s most formidable Vikings arrive at Banbury Museum & Gallery and they’re staying for the Summer.

From Saturday 25th June, visitors will get to discover more about real Viking heroes, including; the legendary Eric Bloodaxe; ruthless adventurer Harald Hardrada; warrior woman Lathgertha; brave explorer Leif the Lucky; fearsome warrior Sweyn Forkbeard; and the great leader, King Harald Bluetooth of Denmark – among others – as they uncover what makes a true Viking hero.

The arrival of the Vikings marks the launch of Banbury Museum & Gallery’s ‘Heroes of the Viking World’’ exhibition, a touring exhibition from The JORVIK Group of Attractions, operators of the award-winning JORVIK Viking Centre.

Director of Attractions for York Archaeological Trust, the owners and operators of The JORVIK Group, Sarah Maltby, explains: “The Heroes exhibition brings these Viking champions’ stories to life, drawing on historical and archaeological evidence to help explore the idea of heroism in the Viking Age as well as looking at how these people were celebrated and commemorated in their time and ours.”

Visitors can explore how each of these Norse celebrities were celebrated in their time and throughout history and what the archaeological evidence can tell us about the real people behind the myth. These stories are told through a series of display panels, replica objects and human remains displaying battle injuries. Immerse yourself in the sights and smells of the Viking Age when you step inside our impressive replica Viking tent and delve into the world of Viking myths and legends, uncovering the superpowers of Viking gods such as Thor and Odin.

Heroes of the Viking World opens on Saturday 25th June and runs until Sunday 6th November 2022.
