Let Us Slay

Sister Act. Lesley Joseph Sandra Marvin and Lizzie Bea

The highly anticipated production of Sister Act has finally graced the stage in Oxford, and whether you're a fan of the film or new to the story, this Olivier Award-nominated production promises a heavenly treat. The timeless tale of acceptance, unity, and self-discovery was perfectly executed in this production, delivering glamour, hilarity, and touching moments from start to finish.

Stepping into the iconic role of Deloris Van Cartier is the talented Sandra Marvin, known for her performances in Emmerdale and West End productions. Marvin effortlessly embodies the sassy disco diva, delivering risqué one-liners and belting out soul-stirring musical numbers that leave the audience in awe.

Seeking refuge in a convent, Deloris disguises herself as a nun under the watchful eye of Lesley Joseph's Mother Superior. The stage adaptation takes the beloved film and infuses it with the unmatched energy that only a live show can provide. Directed by Bill Buckhurst with choreography by Alistair David, this powerhouse musical features original music by the award-winning Alan Menken, (Disney’s Aladdin and Enchanted).

Alongside Sandra Marvin, the impressive cast includes TV and West End legend Lesley Joseph and Hairspray favourite Lizzie Bea, but a character who particularly stood out to me (and the rest of the audience judging by the standing ovation he received at the end of the show) was Alfie Parker who played Eddie. His voice was goosebump-worthy, and he captured the essence of the humble, genuine, and kind-hearted character, Steady Eddie perfectly.

The production seamlessly blends perfect comedic timing with a cleverly crafted script, resulting in a show packed with laughs. Characters like Pablo, Joey, and TJ—Curtis' motley crew—provide a steady stream of hilarity throughout the performance. The cast exudes charisma and exceptional talent across the board, creating an infectious spirit that permeates the theatre. Sister Act truly delivers a joyous experience that should not be missed.

Prepare to have your spirits lifted, your heart warmed, and your willpower tested as you resist the urge to sing and dance along. Sister Act is onstage at New Theatre Oxford until Saturday 1 July.
