Music At Oxford Spring Events 2023

ONLINE: Da pacem, Domine | Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir

Friday 24 February - Thursday 23 March Music at Oxford is pleased to announce that the opening concert from their ARVO PÄRT…and a Littlemore festival which took place last November, will be made available to watch online between 24 February and 23 March. The Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir, who were named one of the world’s top 10 choirs by BBC Music Magazine, performed the concert which had a theme of peace on the 18 November, and the concert film is now being released on the 24 February, Estonian Independence Day and the first anniversary of the war in Ukraine.

English Symphony Orchestra and Esther Abrami

10 March, 7.30pm | Sheldonian TheatreThe English Symphony Orchestra (ESO) undertake a journey of discovery in a programme that captures the imagination. Featuring the world premiere of Robert Saxton’s Scenes from the Epic of Gilgamesh alongside works inspired by Scotland including Mendelssohn’s Symphony No. 3 in A minor ’Scottish’ and Bruch’s Scottish Fantasy. The ESO will be joined by Sony Classical artist and social media superstar, Esther Abrami to perform the Bruch.

Albinoni, Rose and Friends | Jupiter Orchestra, Gregory Rose

28 April, 7.30pm | Sheldonian TheatreFrom one of the oldest, and most loved, oboe concertos to one of the newest, with a world premiere from Gregory Rose in celebration of his 75th birthday. Both performed by renowned oboist George Caird, a long-standing friend of Rose. The evening will also feature two works for string orchestra: Janáček’s Idyll Suite, previously recorded by Chandos by the Jupiter Orchestra and Tchaikovsky’s heartfelt Serenade for Strings.

The Power of Compassion: 50th Anniversary Tour | Tashi Lhunpo Monks

4 May, 7.30pm | Oxford Town HallMusic at Oxford is pleased to present the Tibetan Buddhist Monks from the Tashi Lhunpo Monastery as they visit the UK on their 50th Anniversary tour. From mesmerising Buddhist chants to swirling masked dances in ceremonial costumes and accompanied by the sound of ancient Tantric musical instruments, the monks evoke the atmosphere of sacred Tibet. This will prove to be an exciting and unique event.

On the outside, looking in | The Marian Consort

20 May, 7.30pm | SJE ArtsMusic at Oxford is pleased to present the award-winning singers of The Marian Consort and their programme, On the outside, looking in. This programme explores common ground between the marginalised voices of the past alongside contemporary responses from British composers. It includes works by Vicente Lusitano, notable for being the first published black composer, and Renaissance nun Raffaella Aleotti who was described as ’not human but truly an angelic spirit’, alongside works by Caroline Shaw, Willian Byrd and Judith Weir.

20 Years of Quatuor Modigliani

8 June, 7.30pm | Sheldonian TheatreThe Paris based Quatuor Modigliani, founded in 2003 and now considered one of the world’s best string quartets, is celebrating its 20th anniversary in 2023 and Music at Oxford is thrilled to be bringing them to Oxford for the very first time, to celebrate. Their programme features a selection of their favourite works including those by Beethoven, Haydn and Wolf alongside a newly commissioned piece by Jean-Frédéric Neuburger.
