Spring into Shakespeare

divider

Shakespeare is arguably the greatest playwright of all time. He created some of the most well-known plays and recognisable characters in all of English literature. Due to the language, dramatical and social conventions of the time, some people may find Shakespeare's works difficult to approach.

The University of Birmingham is proud to offer ‘Spring into Shakespeare,’ a short course designed to grow the knowledge and skills necessary to fully understand and appreciate Shakespeare’s works. The course develops a critical understanding of Shakespeare’s contribution to literary, theatrical and dramatical history, and the relevance of his works in today’s cultural landscape.

Each week will focus on a particular aspect of Shakespeare's achievements. In Weeks One to Four, we analyse Shakespeare’s language by defining genre, exploring early modern playing practices and Shakespeare’s characters in contemporary performance. In Weeks Five and Six, we look at resources to conduct research and academic writing.

This course is delivered by the Shakespeare Institute and features lecture content from leading scholars in Shakespeare Studies. Drawing on the University of Birmingham’s collaboration with the Royal Shakespeare Company, Spring into Shakespeare will also explore the playwright’s works from the perspective of a professional actor.

This course is completed entirely online.

Next intake starting date: 11 April 2022

Duration: 6 weeks

A Certificate of Participation will be awarded to participants who contribute constructively to weekly discussions and exercises/assignments for the duration of the course.

This is a course for anyone who is interested in reading or watching Shakespeare's plays with greater understanding and enjoyment. For more information, visit
